A Bolt For Freedom by Jennie Phillips – $1.14

A bolt for freedomEven before moving to Scotland with her actor husband Conrad Phillips, which is the amazing and heart-warming story told in ‘Skeoch – Our new life on a Scottish hill farm’, Jennie had led an adventurous and enterprising life.

She was brought up until the age of nine in a large, rambling house in Essex with two considerably older sisters, her twin brother having died in the womb. The family then moved around the South of England, which resulted in Jennie receiving a rather patchy education.

When she left school at the age of fifteen, she launched herself into the world of work as a secretary and Girl Friday (including in the Bulgarian Embassy where she learned enough Bulgarian to say that she didn’t speak Bulgarian), finding her feet first with Kinocrat Films, and then Arrow Productions where she met various well-known figures in the acting world. Among these was Spike Milligan, whose love of practical jokes she witnessed at first hand.
Here also she met her future husband, Conrad Phillips, the star of the well-loved series ‘William Tell’. They embarked on an unusual courtship. It included a tour of the submarine HMS Resolution whose periscope, she realized, was trained on the bench where the two of them had been sitting earlier!

Due to a difficult pregnancy, Jennie became unable to continue her work at Arrow Productions. Conrad’s steady role in ‘The Newcomers’, however, allowed them finally to leave lodgings and have a mortgage and a home of their own.

In the end, London life lost its charm. As Jennie writes: “We did not escape from life: we ran full tilt eventually into splendid isolation; into a life which alternated between tranquillity and hectic engagement with life, half way up a mountain.”

Skeoch – Our new life on a Scottish hill farm by Jennie Phillips – $3.54

Skeoch“An amazing tale of 70’s life on a remote Scottish farm” Southall Film Studios

“I have to state right now that we never had any intention of buying a farm. Least of all in South West Scotland. It wasn’t one of those nice, rational decisions that we all think we will make, when the time comes. It was totally irrational and made absolutely no sense at all – but we made it just the same!”

So begins a new life for Jennie and her actor husband Conrad, star of the long-running TV series, William Tell. This is the story of their titanic struggles against cold, wind, drought, disease, illness and ill luck of every kind in their establishing of a home and a viable farm against the backdrop of a mountain called Skeoch.

We feel with the author the joy of bringing a newborn lamb back from the brink of death, and the anguish of losing a herd of dairy cattle to brucellosis. There is the day when the hay garnered at great pains blows away along with the barn in which it was stored, and times when financial ruin threatens. There are deprivations, born with fortitude and good humour, but also the delights of introducing two small daughters to life on the farm and the natural world around it.

This is a book which envelops you in its world and has you feeling every disaster and every triumph as if you had lived it.
